What's your 'status'?

Being a student, ever-confused in selecting a suitable occupation, I was advised to think about the Indian Civil Services as a possible option by many among my family and friends. On being asked why, I was given a three-pronged reply of ‘money, power and high job satisfaction’, and I had to admit, the combination is alluring. Any one out of the three is reason enough to do almost anything in today’s world.

But this forced me to think, why do we do everything in life? What causes our actions? What drives us? What is the ultimate motivation, the reason of everything, hidden deep down in our subconscious, which we seldom realise? Money and power can be good reasons, but they are mere instruments of achieving a further objective: Social Acceptability.

Why do we buy a fancy, top-of-the-line cell phone? Why do we travel in a gas-guzzling SUV or a luxury sedan? Why do we wear jewellery? Why do we flaunt the tags of our clothes? Because this is what we have to do in order to be accepted socially. These are the norms of acceptability in today’s society. And since man has always been a social animal, people are lured by these norms just as the Pied Piper hypnotised the rats, blindly following without using their own rationale.

The parameters of social acceptance are skewed and strange. A rich person automatically receives respect from the society, thereby promoting evils like greed, theft and bribery among people. A person with a big, expensive, less fuel-efficient (because then it is expensive to maintain) car is admired, thereby making people nonchalant towards the environment. A person who travels by a privet jet is looked at with awe, rather than despised for emitting as much CO2 in the atmosphere as a small town would emit in a day.

I was recently talking to a friend of mine, who belongs to a very well-to-do family, telling her that I’d love to own a Reva, the zero-emission, battery-operated car, so that I can contribute to the environment. To my astonishment, her reply was: “I’d not want to be even seen near one. What would people think of me!”

Here, the fault lies not in one person in particular, but the society as a whole. The parameters based on which a person is judged and respected in the society is predominantly money. People look up to those who flaunt it, and wish to emulate them in every possible way.

Why shouldn’t these parameters include the moral and ethical values in the person, or the behaviour one has towards fellow humans, or the concern towards other living beings, the society and the environment?

If owning a fancy car would stop being a status symbol, people would increasingly use public transport or more fuel-efficient vehicles, thereby reducing the global warming. If having tons of money is no longer a norm for getting accepted by the society, maybe the greed would lessen, resulting in a drop in the crime-rate, since most of the crimes have money as their motive.

A sheep will follow other sheep blindly, even if they’re all falling into a cliff. But we claim to be the most intelligent species on the planet. We have the brains to rationalise and challenge existing beliefs, then why not use it? Ironically, almost all of us would envisage these concepts in theory, but when it comes to adopting them and applying them on ourselves, we choose to ignore them as if we've never heard of them. ‘Simple living’ has always been a way of life in the Indian context. The sooner we realise that, the better this world would be.

  3. absolutely right thought.but you should be appreciated for putting it on blog or admitting it.one gr8 step u have taken to think over it,but most essential part is to act over it.as jeet said gr8 thought n everybody knows ,he is right.man has tendency to adopt least resistance way however it may be counterintutative or against his right intution.one has to have this much courage to start thing with resistance and it requires self discipline to withstand the temptation to tread the path of least resistance.really nobody does require to have an ideal or model before doing right thing.
the problem not lies with social acceptability but i think real problem with the fact, why we seek for it?

  8. Very well written dear...But I have some points...Being socially acceptable is a big thing nowadays... Everyone wants to

be rich...Its a fashion to have a luxury car and all..its coz of western culture.. you can't blame to anyone..
as u gave example of sheep..a man does same coz he thought that it is the way to his/her success...and its only coz of

    COMPETITION..

and we learn this word from first day of our school life..that you should be better than this girl or boy...
and when we become young,it is converted into jealousy and all...Then this man tried to be better than everyone and

    again there is a competition...
If there is no competition, everybody lives a simple life..there will be no violance,no competition to become rich..

So 'Simple Living' is very difficult but not 'impossible'...

  10. Very much True of all that is written... but may be something has to be said here about the prevailing conditions in our country that lead to this so called " STATUS-FIED" Life.

According to me this is due to "CORRUPTION". This huge difference in economic conditions in Indian people has given way to this Status based Life.

In India there are either too Rich people or very poor citizens. This indifference has lead to Mentality of the public. The Rich to poor ratio in India is very high ( almost triple) as compared to America where the poor is made richer by the services provided for their Uplift. Thus there is hardly anyone noticing anyone's Car or House or Clothes...because government provides them with these things and here all that money which should be spent on Society Standard Uplift is spent on buildings statues of F***ing ELEPHANTS and Other Memorials like in UP.

Really happy that my friend here came up with a thought to make people realize the worsening conditions in our country.

But still we say, "EAST or WEST, India is the Best".

  12. A very Diligent attempt dude!
Though i have always admired your perception but there is lot to be discussed on this.
Your writeup on "Social Acceptability" is very impressive but you haven't given the solutions to the aforementioned problems.
My point is.......its very common and easy to point problems....I was rather seeking for an acceptable solution.....hope to get it in future posts.

  14. appreciable attempt ... tiny drops of water make a mighty ocean ... if evry individual realises dis n adOpts it in dr lives ... d sOciety is bOund to prgress ... its all about self introspection and self rectification rather than pointing towards others and waiting foe others to start and den to follow dem ..... and as far as d above post said that d solutions havent been talked about ... its jzz d problems dat have been laid emphasis upon den i wuld jzz say dat do read the last sentence of d blogger ... d solution is clearly mentioned ... its all a game of simple thoughts and simple living dat can lead our country to d zenith again ... !!!!!!!
